On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, two beta readers . . .
Picking the right people to read a completed manuscript before submitting to agents and publishers is so important.
Some helpful tips: Just because someone is an avid reader, doesn't make them a great beta reader. Family members don't always make the best beta readers. Find someone who'll be tough, but constructive. Overly critical people aren't great either. A knowledge of grammar is important. What you want is someone who understands flow. The way the words are written, the way they come together can make or break a story.
This song from Katy Perry is a recent favorite. Here are some of the lyrics.
You don't have to feel like a waste of space You're original, cannot be replaced If you only knew what the future holds After a hurricane comes a rainbow Maybe you're reason why All the doors are closed So you could open one That leads you to the perfect road Like a lightning bolt, Your heart will blow And when it's time you'll know:
You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July Cuz baby you're a firework Come on, show 'em What you're worth Make 'em oh, oh, oh As you shoot across the sky
These are first sentences in novels:
Accidents ambush the unsuspecting, often violently, just like love."The Gargoyle, by Andrew Davidson
"Those who can, do. Those who can't, deejay."Revolution, by Jennifer Donnelly
